Low-key hard to follow。 It's not a bad book, but it's definitely a challenge with the language that's used。 Pretty interesting though!! Low-key hard to follow。 It's not a bad book, but it's definitely a challenge with the language that's used。 Pretty interesting though!! 。。。more

I enjoyed it but some of the Irish terms were hard to figure out。 They were at the end of each story but it would have been helpful to have the meaning next to the word。

I really wanted to enjoy this book。 I picked it up a couple years again, and never managed to read it。 It was one of those books that I would periodically pick up, read a few chapters, then convince myself I just wasn't ready for it。 Well, this time, I suffered through a bit more and determined that this book is just not for me。 I don't like how Yeats peppers in stories and overviews in such a disjointed manner。 The style just isn't for me, even if the subject matter is。 I really wanted to enjoy this book。 I picked it up a couple years again, and never managed to read it。 It was one of those books that I would periodically pick up, read a few chapters, then convince myself I just wasn't ready for it。 Well, this time, I suffered through a bit more and determined that this book is just not for me。 I don't like how Yeats peppers in stories and overviews in such a disjointed manner。 The style just isn't for me, even if the subject matter is。 。。。more

Most beautiful compilation of fairy tales, in its original meaning。 The fairies of Ireland hold more power over modern language and litterateur than we know。 This edition is a gorgeous sample with its illustrations and chapters sorted into trooping fairies, ghosts, witches, the devil and so on。 I’ve read it in a nice slow pace, one tale at a time, absorbing every little detail。

One of my favorite classic collections, a true treasury of poems and tales。

This is an absolutely enchanting series of folktales and stories。 I have always been interested in learning more about Irish lore and stories and given the amount of misinformation there has been about it over time it has been very difficult to actually find something that is more on the authentic side。 The poems and stories are wonderfully organized though at times a few of them might be tricky to get through for someone not familiar with some of the folklore already or the old writing style。 H This is an absolutely enchanting series of folktales and stories。 I have always been interested in learning more about Irish lore and stories and given the amount of misinformation there has been about it over time it has been very difficult to actually find something that is more on the authentic side。 The poems and stories are wonderfully organized though at times a few of them might be tricky to get through for someone not familiar with some of the folklore already or the old writing style。 However that being said this collection is Liles better from the either very confusing or heavily sanitized and altered versions of these stories。All in all I wpuld Definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves folklore and wants to learn more about it。 。。。more

Being Scotch/Irish, I’ve always been curious about Irish folklore。 This was a wonderful collection of folklore, fairy tales and poetry, edited by W。B。 Yeats。 I’m a big poetry fan and I loved the poetry in this book。 It was absolutely beautiful。 I was entranced by the stories and was surprised how almost every story contained both religion and superstition。 It was obvious what a woman’s duties were, as almost every story had women spinning on a spinning wheel。 I was also surprised at how much cre Being Scotch/Irish, I’ve always been curious about Irish folklore。 This was a wonderful collection of folklore, fairy tales and poetry, edited by W。B。 Yeats。 I’m a big poetry fan and I loved the poetry in this book。 It was absolutely beautiful。 I was entranced by the stories and was surprised how almost every story contained both religion and superstition。 It was obvious what a woman’s duties were, as almost every story had women spinning on a spinning wheel。 I was also surprised at how much credit was given to women – “What won’t a woman’s sagacity & presence of mind accomplish?” My absolute favorite story was The Pudding Bewitched。 I laughed all through it。 This was my first W。 B。 Yeats book, but it won’t be my last。 I loved this book。 。。。more

A marvelous collection。 I've thoroughly enjoyed my time reading the stories within and learning from the brief explanatory passages at the start of each section as well as the footnotes。 A particular favourite of mine was "Teig O'Kane and The Corpse。"One thing to consider is that it is written in quite a heavy Irish dialect at times so those unfamiliar may struggle to read without referring to Google for help with some of the words and phrases。 A marvelous collection。 I've thoroughly enjoyed my time reading the stories within and learning from the brief explanatory passages at the start of each section as well as the footnotes。 A particular favourite of mine was "Teig O'Kane and The Corpse。"One thing to consider is that it is written in quite a heavy Irish dialect at times so those unfamiliar may struggle to read without referring to Google for help with some of the words and phrases。 。。。more

This book is a very interesting reading if you love fairies, ghosts, witches, giganrs, fantasy and folk tales。 It combines short stories and poetry。 ✍ The Book Editor:William Butler Yeats was a poet, an occultist but also feverish defender of Irish nationalism。 He aimed to show Irish spirit and to encourage Ireland independence from England, these tales clearly show this。 What called my attention is the syncretism of the Catholic faith as well as the Faerie belief。 ✎ The book is divided in the f This book is a very interesting reading if you love fairies, ghosts, witches, giganrs, fantasy and folk tales。 It combines short stories and poetry。 ✍ The Book Editor:William Butler Yeats was a poet, an occultist but also feverish defender of Irish nationalism。 He aimed to show Irish spirit and to encourage Ireland independence from England, these tales clearly show this。 What called my attention is the syncretism of the Catholic faith as well as the Faerie belief。 ✎ The book is divided in the following sections:✶⋆ Fairies:"Who are they? Fallen angels who were not good enough to be saved, nor bad enough to be lost"。 Yeats tries to classify the fairies according to their characteristics。 The stories I particularly enjoyed in each section can be found below:❈ The Trooping Fairies:↠"The Priest's Supper" Illustrates perfectly the words Yeats says to describe fairies。 ↠ "Teig O'Kane (Tadh I Cathan) and the Corpse"An amazing mixture of fairies, ghost and macabre elements any fan of Poe, Lovecraft and associates would certainly admire。 ❈ ChangelingsIf you are familiar with fairies, you will know that they exchange the mortal children's leaving their own。 This section is incredible! Do not expect Disney narratives because they are not! ↠ "The Brewery of Egg - Shells" That tale represents the popular belief of children's being exchanged by fairies leading to wickedness。 It is as macabre as a Poe。 ↠"Jamie Freel and the Young Lady" Another example of fairies mischief but has an splendid ending。 ❈ The Merrow ↠"The Soul Cages" An amazing story of a Merrow, a combination of faeries and Christianity, with a very beautiful imagery and symbolism。 ❈ The Solitary FairiesIn this section, Yeats selected stories in the following faeries: • The Lepracaun • The Cluricaun • The Far Darrig • The Pooka • The Banshee✶⋆ Ghosts:"The souls of the dead sometimes take the shapes of animals。。。They will sometimes take the form of insects, especially of butterflies"。 In this section, fairies seem to disappear giving the space for ghosts。 But you can clearly see a distinction from English ghosts stories, as they are more concerned with nature, animals and Catholic religion has a stronger presence, at least in this selection。 ✶⋆ Witches, Fairy Doctors:Here, Yeats makes a distinction between those two kinds and we return to fairies once more。 There are pastoral and countryside descriptions, folk tales mixed with religious elements。 ✶⋆T'yeer-Na-N-OGe:This section contains stories on the Country of the Young。 The ageless land, the forever young and well preserved。 ✶⋆ Saints, Priests:Here, we can see once more, how strong the Catholic belief is in the stories, combined with folk and local belief。 Animals play a relevant role。 ✶⋆ The Devil:As the tittle suggests, these stories focus on the devil。 And here, again the Catholic belief is knotted with the local belief and superstition。 ✶⋆ Gigants:In this section, we return to the Celtic influence。 For example, "A Legend of Knockmany" has some echoes of the ancient Irish heroes, like Cú Chulainn。 ✶⋆ Kings, Queens, Princess, Earls, Robbers:This section might remind you of the Grimm Brothers, or Perrault。 But, the selection here have their own unique elements that make them remarkable。 I particularly loved:↠"The Twelve Wild Geese" This one is very beautiful, it shows the importance and symbolism of the geese but, at the same time, the cooperation among women。 ↠ "The Haughty Princess" The plot might be a common one: a princess need a husband to marry, but it is a fresh, intelligent and amazing tale。 ↠"The Story of Conn-Eda; or The Golden Apples of Lough Erne" Now I can understand some of C。 S。 Lewis influence in his Chronicles of Narnia, specially The Magician's Nephew。 Despite Lewis lived in England, he was Irish and considered himself Irish from the heart。 • ᚠ Conclusion: Overall, I enjoyed the selection very much。 As the title suggests, the stories are not only focused on fairies as I would have loved。 But it has other folk tales that are very enjoyable and I would certainly recommend and reread。 ⁕ Beaware that the stories are written with dialects。 It is not bad at all, I prefer it that way so far, but it might be a bit hard to read some stories。 At least for someone like me whose second language is English。 ⁕ 。。。more
